Starting your own company needs to have more behind it that just being more convenient than working an employed job, but at the same time, you also need to make it work around you and your lifestyle commitments – otherwise what is the point?
Running a business is hard work, I am not going to lie to you. But your are in control of what, where and when that hard work looks like, and it is imperative right from the get go that you control this by understanding your company’s vision, mission and guiding principles.
These are the foundation of your business and should be put in place before anything else is done. Who are you, what do you do and how are you prepared to do it? These are the questions your mission, vision and guiding principles will help you to answer.
Your vision statement is your starting point, and should be created first. Start with the end in mind. Imagine what your company will look like in 5 or 10 years time, what do you want your business to be known for? A crystal clear vision is needed when you start out, otherwise, you can easily lose sight of what you are aiming for. When making strategic decisions for you company, your vision will help guide you and ensure you make the best choices.

Once your vision is in place and you have a clear image of what you are striving for, use it to help you make all kinds of business decisions, such as your branding, how you conduct yourself, what kind of customers you want. Always ask yourself if the decision you are making supports your company vision – you’d be surprised how many times answering that question takes you in a different direction!
